Chapter 12
When I open my eyes again, Iâm in my room. Again. Iâm getting real tired of being here. Rick is hovering over me with his stethoscope on my chest. When I smile up at him, he doesnât smile back.
The silence is getting to me. âMaybe you should move into the guest room. Youâve been here enough.â
âJaime, this isnât a joke. Youâve lost a lot of blood over the past few days. Your body may be able to heal rapidly, but it obviously canât replace your volume as fast. You need to take care of yourself.â He says it like a scolding father or a concerned friend. âWhat happened?â
I shake my head, unable to talk about it. He wouldnât understand anyway.
âHe called me on your cell to come check on you and then left. Canât say Iâm disappointed. Expected as much from him. Assume you two got into one.â
âMisunderstanding, thatâs all.â
âCanât he wait until youâre better to pick a fight?â
I shake my head. âHe thinks Iâm trying to kill him.â
Rick is visibly stunned. âWhat? Why would he think something as ludicrous as that?â
âItâs a long story. Canât really blame him. Thought he was trying to kill me, too.â
âWell, there you go. A match made in heaven.â He shoves his stethoscope in his bag and I roll my eyes at him.
âDonât get attached to me, Rick. As you can see, Iâm not your typical girl next door. And Iâm not the angel I was. Suppose I never will be again.â
âToo late.â
His comment is concerning. How do I show him Iâm not worth the effort? âRick, what do you think life would be like being married to someone like me? You think itâs all rosy? What would happen on our wedding night when you wake to me being slashed by a psychotic killer in my dream, in our bed? Can you handle stepping out of the way while I battle to the death, watching my blood stain our sheets, coat the walls? Can you stand by and watch when I finally meet the one who takes my life?â
He closes his eyes, his body shaking all over. âI can try to do something. I could try to protect you. At least Iâd be here for you instead of leaving when you need me most.â
âThis isnât the life of a mortal. I chose to be a dark angel, you chose to be a human. If I allow myself to get too close to you, one day the demons I hunt could find you too. Could I live with myself knowing you died because of me? Because you fell in love with me? I canât permit myself to fall in love with you for that purpose alone.â
âYet, you let yourself love that immortal who doesnât deserve you?â
I catch my breath at his frankness. My voice is barely a whisper, barely audible, as I avoid the true meaning of his comment. âHeâs not really immortal. We both can die. You should know that by now.â
Heâs silent. Unable to look me in the eyes.
